EVE

Throat tight, I stare at the monitor. Storm’s idea to rob the Bayside Art Gallery of the Rembrandt circles my mind. Again and again, the word heist ebbs and flows, like an endless tide washing to shore but never actually reaching it.

We can’t do this.

The chances of getting to the painting and smuggling it out of the building without being discovered are so slim they’re non-existent.

Taking the communication device out of my ear, I put it on the table. Glancing at the time on my cell, I tap my nails on the benchtop. Sixteen minutes. It doesn’t take that long to get back from the corner of Wayfarer and Promenade. “Where are you, Angel?”

The elevator doors slide open.

My head whips in the direction of the sound. A small gasp of relief mixed with annoyance fills the silence.

Angel’s eyes bore into mine, learning all my secrets.

Too late, I try to hide them.

Striding toward me, he doesn’t slow down until his arms are around my waist and his mouth is on mine.

Long, hot, passionate. The kiss is everything I need at a time like this. Yet, the plan he just agreed to has me delving my fingers through his hair and tugging on the ends.

Angel pulls away slightly, his lips swollen and wet. “What?”

“You can’t seriously expect me to be okay with this. You’re risking your life, your freedom, and for what?”

“Yours.”

Damn.

“Please don’t do this, Angel. You’ve already done so much.” My voice is husky, filled with the words I can’t say.

“You don’t have a choice. It’s already done.” His thumb brushes the small of my back. “I won’t let Storm use you as collateral. You deserve more—are more than anyone gives you credit for.”

Throat tight, I try to swallow the tears that threaten. “No one has ever said anything like that to me before.” I pause, considering my next words carefully. “Sentiment aside, surely you can see how dangerous this heist could be?”

Ducking his head, he peppers soft kisses along the column of my neck. “I’ll be fine.”

My eyes flicker closed. “Hacking into the gallery, overriding their security system, and stealing a priceless painting makes us all as guilty as Storm.”

He bites down. “Don’t say his name when I’m touching you.”

I hiss, then sigh.

“Fine,” I murmur, wanting more of his touch. “We’re all just as culpable as him.”

He licks away the sting. “I won’t get caught, and I sure as fuck won’t let you be sold like a piece of artwork. We’re doing this on my terms.”

If only that were true. “How is that possible when Storm is blackmailing you? Think about it, Angel. We don’t know what he’s capable of. We can’t predict his actions.”

“Yes, we can. He thinks he’s in control when he’s not.”

Straightening, I glance up at him. His eyes are dark, knowing, but I can’t read the meaning behind them. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“Enough to keep you safe.”

Oh, hell no. “Angel,” I warn.

“Eve,” he growls. “Don’t push me on this. You know what I’m capable of.”

Yes, I do.
